To comply with the EU e-Privacy Directive regulations, website owners must obtain agreement from users about the use of cookies on their site. This is a legal requirement in the countries affected, for example in UK implementation falls under the Information Commissioner’s Office.\u00a0 Implied consent is acceptable on condition that there is positive certainty the users fully understand the issue.\u00a0 The exact qualifications for this are somewhat uncertain.<\/p>\n

This WordPress plugin shows first-time visitors a conspicuous bar across the page bottom with explanatory text, an accept cookies button and a refusal button that will redirect them away.\u00a0 The bar does not block further navigation, but is prominent enough to ensure it will be noticed.<\/p>\n

The message text and the test on the buttons can be customised.\u00a0 The message text can include HTML markup and can have a link for further information about cookies.<\/p>\n

Acceptance results in a cookie being set to prevent future display of the bar. The cookie name can be customised, which might be important if the website uses non-Wordpress pages.<\/p>\n

This plug-in was adapted from the excellent\u00a0cookie-warning by MAJ Consultancy<\/a>.\u00a0 Our cookie bar\u00a0 just has a different style – choose whichever best suits your needs.\u00a0 Both are based around the lightweight JavaScript by Scott Herbert.<\/p>\n

  1. Download the .zip file for the plugin<\/li>\n
  2. Login to your WordPress dashboard<\/li>\n

  4. Under the \u2018Install Plugins\u2019 header, click \u2018Upload\u2019<\/li>\n
  5. Click the \u2018Choose File\u2019 button, browse and select the .zip file downloaded at step 1<\/li>\n
